Josep Soler Barceló - architect

Josep has worked at ESTUDI HÈLIX since 1984, and is a founding member of this company. He is currently in charge of town planning and building plans and projects and the execution of works, and is also responsible for the company’s development and marketing.

He has a degree in architecture, with a specialisation in town planning from the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona (1985) and an architectural technician’s degree from the Escola Universitària d’Arquitectura Tècnica de Barcelona (1977).

Between 1978 and 1982 he shared a professional studio with the architects Joan Rosselló and Pere Marsé in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, and between 1982 and 1983 in Vilanova i la Geltrú.

Over the course of his career, he has presided over the preparation of local development frameworks as well as the associated planning, urban development projects, reparcelling projects and other town planning work. These projects include the General Development Plans for Gelida (1985), Castellví de la Marca (1985), Subirats (1987), and Sant Llorenç d’Hortons (1988); the Subsidiary Planning Bylaws for Font-rubí (1985), the Town Development Plan for Santa Margarida i els Monjos (2011), and the Special Development Plans and Architectural Heritage Catalogues for Vilanova i la Geltrú (1984), Vilafranca del Penedès (1986), Cardedeu (1998) and Santa Margarida i els Monjos (2011).

He has also prepared and managed many building projects, for both facilities and residential buildings promoted by public and private initiatives.

He has specific experience working as a consultant and advisor to local corporations, working as a municipal architectural technician for Castellví de la Marca Town Council (1979-1985), and as a municipal architect for the town councils of Castellví de la Marca (1985-1999), Torrelles de Foix (1995-1996), and Santa Margarida i els Monjos (1989-2009), as a cultural advisor for Vilafranca Town Council (1981-1983), member of the advisory team for the Land Use Master Plan for the Alt Penedès within the Alt Penedès Regional Council (2005-2008) and as an advisor and technical coordinator in the construction of tunnels for railway infrastructures for Vilafranca del Penedès Town Council (2006-2008).

He is highly experienced in urban management and has taken part in numerous participatory sessions, within the framework of the various urban development plans he has prepared.

He has complemented his professional experience by carrying out work linked to the elected positions he has held in Vilafranca del Penedès Town Council – where he was responsible for urban development and housing policy from 1991 to 2003 – and as the municipal officer in charge of cooperation missions in Italy, Portugal, Jordan, Brazil and Argentina.

He has presented lectures and papers at congresses and conferences both nationally and internationally, and has given lectures as part of university and postgraduate courses in both public and private institutions.

He has written numerous articles on architecture and town planning and is the co-author of the following books: “Vilafranca del Penedès a través de la seva arquitectura. La ciutat que ens ha arribat” (1992), “Santa Margarida i els Monjos. El nostre patrimoni arquitectònic” (2003), “Història de Vilafranca del Penedès” (2008), and “Santa Margarida i els Monjos. Espais de convivència” (2008).

Since 2005, he has occupied the position of president of VINSEUM, the Museum of Viticulture of Catalonia (Museu de les Cultures del Vi de Catalunya).
